Fans of Archie Bronson Outfit will be drooling at the prospect of this new material as it begins to spread like a smelly wildfire through the kingdom of noise.
Others may still regard them as a difficult listen, with Windett and Hobday’s guitars continuing to crash against each other like cars at a destruction derby. The production work of Tim Goldsworthy however, ensures that an extra dimension is at play for the majority of the trio’s psych-rock show over the course of Coconut.
Songs like ‘Chunk’ and ‘Bite It & Believe It’ are rather disco-friendly by comparison to some the band’s earlier stuff, with plenty of groove lurking behind the usual Archie Bronson Outfit myriad of textures, which violently jostle for attention in the foreground.
Although it can sometimes feel like the band are trying to destroy an effects pedal (such as on ‘You Have A Right To A Mountain Life / One Up On Yourself’), there are still more moments of restraint and delicacy on Coconut than we’ve been used to hearing from the ABO stable in the past.
‘Hunt You Down’ carries this ethos forward, making for compelling listening not only for the disturbing nature of its title and refrain, but also because it sees the trio approaching the realm of traditional melody.
