If Mariachi El Bronx are your kind of thing, you'll find yourself at home (and exploring strange new worlds) with this reissue of Calexico's 2003 album, issued as part of City Slang's 20th anniversary series.
Alongside songs which feel like the first dance at a Mexican wedding ('Across The Wire') you'll find soundtracks to late night campfire scenes in Western movies (the gypsy lament of 'Sunken Waltz') and darkly cinematic slow-burners which recall Portishead ('Black Heart', an epic which hints at unspeakable tragedy and heroism, if that doesn't sound too over the top!).
This was the first charting album for the Arizona band, a not unsurprising feat considering the delicacy and intelligence of the compositions and the weather-torn but courageous vocals of singer Joey Burns.
The reissue comes with bonus tracks and out-takes, which should give you a soundtrack to your nachos and chili evenings for some time to come.
