Cold Seeds
(Song, By Toad Records)
I'm gonna be cheesy here, OK? Prepare yourself! It goes a bit like this: I get emotionally moved by looking at the stars at night. I also get a strangely deep thrill out of watching the sea, or finding myself alone in a forest. I'm not sure if I was a witch in a former life or what - but one thing I do know is that King Creosote can tap into this very personal trait within me. Consequently, I love the bastard.
The Cold Seeds are a sort of contemporary Scottish folk supergroup - a phrase which should send a cold shot of fear down your spine, but here makes for the perfect company: Mr Creosote is present and as assuringly mysterious as ever, but so is Meursault frontman Neil Pennycook and a subtle crew of female vocalists and guitarists.
Needless to say, between them they create the sound of the coast, and all the loves that blossom or die within its communities. Some songs feel like they've been performed on a barge at 2am after several bottles of red ('By 11 O'Clock') while others are a fairly straightforward toast to the mermaids ('Bubble').
Meanwhile, 'Please Don't Send Me Home' proudly asserts that yes - Celts can do distortion too, motherfuckaz! It's a primal human wail, fed through what I can only imagine is a Vox Shredder 5000, or something of that ilk.
It's been great to see the label Fortuna POP go from humble independence to success - let's hope that with records like this, Song By Toad can pull off a similar trick.
