Raw Power: Legacy Edition
(Sony Music)
After The Stooges reformed in 2003, guitarist Ron Asheton revealed a cassette tape he'd stashed away from 1973 of the band performing live in Georgia. This, along with a subsequent CD of rarities from the era, are the only two reasons that might tempt you into buying 'Raw Power' for approximately the zillionth time.
The LP comes as it was originally mixed by Bowie: still my favourite version of the record thanks to its cheap 'n cheerful production. Assuming you know already that this is one of the greatest pre-punk rock records of all time, let's roll over to the live show.
'Georgia Peaches' is the name of this bootleg, and it's a surprisingly warm and clear recording. Originally intended for radio play, it demonstrates how pianos were used at the time to add a melodic streak to tracks like 'Gimme Danger' and 'Search and Destroy' - an unlikely instrument which works nicely. Iggy meanwhile sounds like he's out for crude kicks, burping and affecting little girl voices between the songs. What a swine.
Over to CD3 and we get a few outtakes from the Raw Power sessions, including an early version of 'Penetration' called 'I'm Hungry' (in which Iggy declares his appetite for munchies - or could it be filthy sex?) Elsewhere, the third disc is let down by some only marginally interesting remixes. Boo.
