Let's Wrestle
In The Court Of The Wrestling Let's
(Full Time Hobby)
After a successful year of touring and a degree of Stateside success (they can now call Arcade Fire as label mates on Merge), Let's Wrestle are reissuing their all-guns-blazing debut with a bonus CD. It's now essentially two albums for the price of one; the original album plus a bonus CD of early rarities.
‘In The Court Of The Wrestling Let's’ is still as immediate and great as it was on its original release. Opener 'My Arms Don't Bend That Way, Damn It!' is loud and up for it from the very offset, while the ‘60s sounding organs that underpin ‘Insects’ and the simple but well-executed song craft of ‘Tanks’ all retain a certain amount of charm. The interludes like ‘Waltz’ are still pointless – but it's a minor quibble for a major success.
The second disc is loaded with more upfront and direct lyrics, with the odd bit of bragging here and there (“We’re going to sniff some glue, then we’re going to piss on your car, nick your cash and go to Quazar ” from the slightly sinister ‘Quazar Blues’) and a rawer, more playful approach. It also features the brilliant ‘Let's Wrestle’, a song about grown men grappling in a ring and featuring the legendary refrain; “Let's wrestle, let's fucking wrestle”.
If you don't have the pleasure of owning a Let's Wrestle record yet, there’s no excuse not to investigate this entirely satisfying reissue.
