Mogwai/ Special Moves
Ric Rawlins takes a look at Mogwai's live album 'Special Moves'

Mogwai
Special Moves
(Rock Action)
Listening to the hallucinogenic and intense music of Mogwai, you'd be forgiven for thinking these post-rock legends were a serious bunch or something. But c'mon, what kind of band can write a song called 'Hunted by a Freak' or 'I Love You, I'm Going To Blow Up Your School' without a sparkle of mischief in their eyes?
It's for this reason that, no-matter how dark, epic or cathartic their music got, Mogwai were never going to turn into Glasvegas - they've always been just a little bit too subversive, too attracted to the Satan they claimed to fear.
Fans of the Glaswegians' blinding noise will be delighted to receive news of this package: it's the greatest hits (a loose term) presented as a New York live concert, then as a movie of the live show.
Predictably, the film's been shot in high contrast black and white, but the familiarity of the format doesn't stop it working like a dream - quite literally in this case, as various shots of the audience reveal their fans in a state of transcendental meditation.
Mogwai are a little bit like the 2001: A Space Odyssey of the rock world; for some people they're a slow moving, dialogue-less bore, while for others they're the ultimate trip, tapping into the awesome potential of the human mind. Love them or fear them, this collection shows the Glasgow megasnakes doing what they do best: making a freakish amount of noise.
