It’s difficult not to have the phrase ‘Jools Holland Hootenanny’ recurring in your mind as the latest Brit-rocking album from Mr Weller starts spinning on the hi-fi, but there are reasons to be cheerful; ‘No Tears To Cry’ inhabits a northern soul ‘60s pop vibe not dissimilar from that of Richard Hawley, ‘Aim High’ pitches itself as a retro 007 soundtrack, and ‘Fast Car/Slow Traffic’ even feels like Blur in a playful art-pop mode.
For every enjoyable song however, there’s usually another which feels unfocused and half-written, such as the oriental-sounding but slightly inconsequential ‘Find The Torch, Burn The Plans’.
