Roots Manuva Meets WrongTom
Duppy Writer
(Big DaDa)
So here we are: one feeble white schmuck with little experience of reggae (beyond the obligatory 'Best of Bob Marley' album), and one Roots Manuva record, which actually isn't so much a Roots Manuva record, but more of a Roots Manuva remix record, courtesy of a DJ called WrongTom. This is going to be interesting/great/show up my limitations/great!
Let it be known however, that even feeble white schmucks such as myself shouldn't be put off this perhaps un-obvious choice of listening. Even I know that Mr Manuva is a satisfying rapper with good taste in music, so as long as his voice stays close to my speakers, I think we're gonna have a good time.
Your hips will almost certainly swivel to the light-footed piano that accompanies 'Lick Up Ya Foot', while the Nintendo-in-Heaven remix of ‘Proper Tings Juggled' feels imaginative and mischievous. Later on, 'Motion 82' brings out the sun and with it, a strutting and witty performance from Mr Manuva.
There are no complaints, but if there were (which there aren't), it'd be that my past admiration for Roots Manuva has been partially based on his fantastic instrumental environments as well as his words - WrongTom is enjoyably minimalist, but doesn't add a great deal to the meal. Sounds like a complaint? Ah phooey - there's still fun to be had in the juxtaposition.
One thing that's easy to forget when you've been on holiday from dub reggae for a while is how damn perky it makes you feel, and (look away now if easily offended) I soon found myself boogying in my boxer shorts while fixing a toasted cheesie to this album. Ooo baby.
