When indie kids go to University for the first time they instinctively pick a mental list of bands they opt to vocally support. This list always comprises of obscure examples of ‘terminally underrated’ edgy acts from backwater Yorkshire or Kent whereby the groups name is less reason, more indicative of their universal failures. Yeah, this sad, sad pastime occurring through a potent combination of naivety and pretension is best avoided; if I could go back and do it all over again I hope I’d chose differently, but it’s unlikely.
SSLYBY will be on someone’s list. They will own a t-shirt and wear it to student indie nights. They’ll wear it as often as possible but not so much that any potential partner could pigeonhole their highly individual taste.
Let It Sway is their party record. Maybe they got bored watching fans perform on-the-spot swooning. Maybe they want to garnish themselves with groupies who are into more than 90’s twee. Either way this record is loaded with ideas and textures, rhythms and choruses. The vocals make out this gurning posture that singers do when they’re enjoying themselves a little too much. There’s no doubt that this unrestrained production is the work of Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie. So when you think about it, there’s no surprise that Let It Sway is a great college rock record.
