The Brute Chorus’ return sees them confirm their status as one of the most interesting groups to be currently doing the rounds.
‘How The Caged Bird Sings’ is an album of remarkable disquiet, all captured with expert poise by four talented musicians. From the hushed intrigue of ‘Banged And Blown’ and ‘Lazarus’, to the more frenetic, rockabilly-tinged recent single ‘Could This Be Love?’, there’s an ever-present feeling that these Londoners are going to keep on surprising you with every passing track.
From a lyrical point-of-view, they also find ways of keeping the listener on edge, with certain descriptions given an absorbing quality as events start to unfold - “If I had a wife, she’d be beautiful. And cold as the night,” whispers James Steel at the beginning of ‘Wife’; his vocals belonging to a quietly turbulent storyteller in his prime.
File this LP under ‘weird’ and cherish it. This work by The Brute Chorus is as unnerving and unpredictable as it is addictive.
