DR MARTENS COLLABORATE IN STYLE

“There is a first time for everything and for many people their first pair of Dr. Martens is a memorable moment in time, an opening statement of self – expression and creativity. Over the past 50 years Dr. Martens boots and shoes haven’t changed – the original styles are still simple, versatile, functional and stylist all at the same time”.
For AW11 Dr Martens has teamed up with The British Millerain Co. Ltd on footwear, clothing and accessories. Using a selection of classic waxed canvas fabrics the partnership’s aim is to focus on quality and manufacturing and with a celebrated background in waterproofed, industrial and sports fabrics, who better to do the job than The British Millerain?
This season’s footwear sees the coming together of ‘Chera’ wax canvas and premium quality leather for the Windsor collection. Combine this sturdy blend with the classic cultural styling of Dr Martens and a true masterpiece is created. You also have an option of the Duple collection, which, like the Windsor, have strong hints of British countryside style but with the addition of the brick red sole, a symbol of British subculture.
A great item created by Dr Martens this season is the unisex scooter mac, influenced again by British subculture. The British Millerain Co. Ltd boosted the quality of this jacket by giving it a treatment with a water-resistant, shell waxed canvas. It is available in tan and dark brown with an iconic tartan lining.

Filed in Fashion by Mirka Virtanen at 9.27am on 17 October 11
Award winning singer-songwriter, SARAH BLASKO, has released a new alt-folk EP ‘Cinema Songs’, featuring interpretations of her favorite songs of the cinema. Artrocker talks to Blasko about the record and her song selections. ‘Well, all of the movies I love - with the exception of Xanadu. I love the song but not the movie! Also, Fame is more a childhood favourite, Annie hall is pretty much my favourite film of all time and Cabaret and The Sound Of Music are two of my favourite screen musicals.’
Sarah’s music is melodic and reflective of the world she’s travelling through. Inspirations behind the songs come from the need to distance herself from that world. ‘I usually start with a feeling and a sound. It could be the sound of a few chords on the piano, and then I write from what the mood of the sound conveys to me.’
This left Artrocker to wonder, if all her records have been born and written in different places and each of these albums have a distinctly different sound, what has living and working in Los Angeles, New Zealand and Sweden brought to her music, and also, her style? She admits that where you write and record really affect on the creative outcome. ‘It seeps in somehow, even if subtly. It has to do with working with people from different musical backgrounds as well.’
And her clothing style is affected, she buys vintage wherever she goes. Like her music, her style could be seen as stories of different places. And do her stylistic influences change as her music does? ‘Yes. Different things catch your eye [when in a different place] and you want to try different approaches to express different emotions.’ Overall, she describes her clothing style as ‘old-fashioned’. At the moment, she particularly loves clothing from the 40s, and her favourite designer is Miu Miu. Coincidental, perhaps, that this season’s collection of the label carries a strong 1940s silhouette and feel to it.
All of Sarah’s movie picks happen to be quite stylish. Of course, her style inspirations are the likes of Holly Golightly in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ or Scarlet in ‘Gone with the Wind’.
