Indie folk-rock duo Herman Dune are set to release a collection of classic attire with fashion tyrants APRIL 77.

The two have collaborated to create the ultimate French accompaniment; a capsule collection of limited edition chinos and tees to celebrate the release of the cult band’s new album Strange Moosic.

“Tell Me Something I Don’t Know”, the first single, signifies change with a video featuring a young runaway Yeti - and actor John Hamm from Mad Men.

Artrocker.TV had a chance to interview the duo on their debut collection, their views on fashion and why low-waist pants drive them crazy!

ARTROCKER: So why APRIL 77?

HERMAN DUNE: I don't know if I chose them or if they chose me, but that being said, I chose to work with them first because they make Vegan Clothing, then they have great style, and they have a Guitar Pick pocket on their trousers.

I found out about them when I saw The Rolling Stones perform. Ronny Wood was wearing a great jacket, and my girlfriend who's a designer told me she thought it was an April 77, it's how I got into them, really...

Does fashion influence your work in any way?

It probably does for Lady Gaga or The Sex Pistols, but I think that the music I admire is as remote from fashion as it could be. It comes from an insight, a vision, a dream, and the heart, and all of them are blind to the world of appearances.

On the other hand, as a man, and also as a performer, I pay close attention to the way I dress. So to answer your question, Fashion has nothing to do with my creative process, but I like to choose my clothes with care, and sometimes the choices I make will have an influence on Fashion, and sometimes the choices I make are subliminally induced by Fashion.

What’s the concept behind the collection?

Hmm... To be honest, it start with me hating trousers that sit below the waist... They drove me crazy for years, Low-Waist pants!!! I hate to seat on my underpants, I think that pants are designed to cover your behind, not to sit under it. Anyway, I found this one pair of trousers at April 77, the DAD, that had the kind of look I go for, that is, High waist and cigarette legs. Apparently I was one of the only people who bought it, and Brice and I started joking about having a signature model, since I was the only one wearing it.

It turned out that not only Brice is a great designer, but he is also a man who always does what he says, and a few months later he asked me to actually think about a Signature model. I remembered how I wanted Jason Lee signature shoes when I was a kid, and I thought it'd be great to have this for a musician. I thought about details that I like in pants, then a cool design for a shirt, and a guitar pick, I also thought that it'd be great if it all came in a laundry bag, kind of...

Is it in any way related to your music?

Not really, you know... It's related to the way I look, certainly, but I think I could play the same kind of music if I was dressed differently... The one thing though, is that I wanted the collaboration to be very simple and honest, and I think that Herman Dune's music is simple and honest too.

How would you describe your personal style?

Well, as an example, I recently was invited to a private party after an evening when when I was performing in Cannes, during the Movie Festival. Although I was on the guest-list of this great actor I know, and I thought I was wearing my best pants and shirt, and my shirt was well tucked in, the bouncers wouldn't let me in, because I wasn't wearing a tuxedo. So I'd say I'm never formal, but always try to follow my own taste, maybe?

Where do you tend to shop most frequent?

Well, April 77... you know, it's one of the only brands that doesn't require me to check all labels all the time, I know they don't use animal corpses to make clothes, and they have great style. Just like I wear GOOD GUYS shoes, they are the only Vegetarian shoes that don't look like Hiking sandals, it was such a relief for me to find cool Vegan shoes that are not sneakers! Then I like old LEVI'S and RALPH LAUREN because they have great fits for someone who's kind of tall and not very heavy like I am... I believe these clothes come from the great story of two very interesting men too, and I like that, the story behind the brands...
