SLEEVENOTES BY PHANTOM
We've been listening to a lot of experimental artists lately it's a genre that we find endlessly fascinating. Some of the artists below are more established in the mainstream press, others are newcomers and deserve more attention... Either way, it's inspiring to hear people pushing the limits and generally taking it to the edge and doing pirouettes. So here's an introductory jukebox of the artists who make the noises that inspire us.
TRACKLISTING
1. "Part. 4 Wave 4 (A) and Wave (B)" by Maryanne Amacher - an American sound artist born in the thirties who really was a precursor of experimental music. She's even collaborated with Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth in her late 60's.
2." Music For Tundra" by Tim Hecker - a Canadian artist who creates a beautiful wall of sound. He describes his music as "Cathedral Electronic Music".
3. Metal Machine Music, Part 4" by Lou Reed - the whole album is such an indulgence, and completely mad. Jonny went to see him perform it live and could barely stand afterwards... but he loved it!
4 "Concrete Walls" by Fever Ray - We love the minimal sound she's got going, it's very hypnotic.
5. "Candle Light Dinner Actress" by Svarte Greiner - I went to see him play live and he was absolutely amazing!
6. Endangered Species" by Pat Metheny/Ornette Coleman - incredibly intense and exhilarating track from this unlikely pairing.
