Jukebox Chatter: Vuvuvultures

Cinematic synth-welders Vuvuvultures were one of the highlights of this year's New Blood Festival. Here they have four questions and one jukebox credit with which to introduce themselves...

Jukebox Chatter: VuvuvulturesIs it Vuh Vuh or Voo Voo? (and how often do you have to explain that?)

We explain it pretty much every time. But that's OK, it's not a normal word. It's basically like saying vultures, but with a stutter. So I guess that makes it Vuh Vuh... Kind of breathy and sexy.wink In fact, you can hear the wonderfully attractive, and Scottish, Nadine Artois saying it HERE. She helps us with wardrobe as each of us only really own one or two outfits that we recycle.

We think songs like 'Safe Skin' are very futuristic, snappy and dramatic. What movie would you soundtrack and why?

Matt: Thanks! Hmmm... Well robots and boobies are always a good start in a movie. A conflicted hero, a fast car, forbidden love and a ruthless villain with at least one disturbing deformity. Basically any movie with those elements in it.

Nicole: And motorcycles and / or marijuana and Mexico. Ideally I'd like to soundtrack a film about a team of space-motorcycling friends with wolf puppies for pets exploring a vaguely latino archipelago, in some new faraway beachy galaxy. They'd all have powers too, and really awesome futuristic lazery weapons.

I feel like each member of the band should answer this question as we're all very different but Paul's in Africa and Harmony is in New York right now. So that's the Matt and Nicole answer.

You run your own club night called The Island - what was the idea behind the night?

Initially um, we'd accidentally last minute ended up responsible as promoters for our first gig. [Long story]. We couldn't really find any shows that would have us that seemed fun and appealing. So we booked some of our favourite London bands at a rad venue and got together with a bunch of our artistically inclined friends and made this platform for which we could make all the fun stuff that was in our brains and give it a place to live in real life. We came up with themes that we could run with to give all the ideas flying around some sort of structure.

The more parties we do the more people get involved it's really great! Instead of us all sitting about drinking cans, smoking cigarettes and complaining that there's no parties to go to we just get together and make some up now. We're trying to bend people's minds as much as possible. Plus because we're running it, we always get to play with bands we like, make sure all the performers get paid and we don't have to chase promoters to pay us after the gig!

You've used guerilla-style online campaigns to get word out about the band. Could you tell us about these and how you think bands could use the internet more creatively?

Hmm. I'd say be a little less self conscious and just have fun making content. Keep up with what's going on and start a conversation with the internet as you would with your friends. People see straight through bullshit, try create something even vaguely entertaining. If there's anything you can do alongside your music, try to vamp it up. We like to work with our fabulous and wonderfully talented friends too and make sure that everything is fun and beer / pizza fuelled to keep spirits up.

Finally, you have one credit on the jukebox! What's it going to be?

Matt: Anything by João Gilberto.
