Not Cool the Band speak out!

We chose our band name for many reasons. The main one was that we wanted to pick something that made us stand out and looked good on show flyers. We have always loved punk bands with bratty, adolescent names like Circle Jerks and Negative Approach and we wanted to be part of that tradition.

We were also laughing at ourselves – we are very aware Not Cool was born from the end of two fashionable bands, it always annoyed me that people seemed to turn up to our old bands shows to pose or take photos. We wanted to alienate as many of those people as possible.  The idea of a group of people getting together to play music and giving themselves some sort of defining name is ridiculous if you think about it – we wanted to lampoon that too.

Being ‘Not Cool’ is really just being yourself. ‘Cool’ is some sort of otherworldly charisma that only a handful of people have. Sonic Youth are cool. Karen O is cool. For everyone else ‘Cool’ is just an uptight pretension. The things that make us not cool are the interesting and quirky parts of our personalities that make us human. Being not cool is liberating because you can just do whatever you want, listen to whatever you like, and dress however you feel.

We’ve been a band called ‘Not Cool’ for a year now and it’s been a trip! We’ve made a lot of good friends and met so many good bands. We’ve met a few people who couldn’t take it too: If you’re still offended by our name than the joke is on you. If you think it’s a personal dis - it is. Music is magic; we want to keep you guessing forever. See you at the next show!
