Polaris 2012
Tess Parks headed to the terraces of Toronto's Masonic Temple on September 24 to check out Canada's annual 'Best Album' award, the Polaris price, with a camera in hand...
My evening began speaking with Al, AKA Cold Specks, and her manager. Incidentally, we all used to shop at the same local grocery in Hackney. Excellent. It wasn't until she got onstage that I realized that I had been speaking to the person possibly the most deserving of the prize. She ended up, in my opinion, having the best performance of the night. Her voice goes on for miles and had everyone in the room silent. Yamataka//Sonic Titan were unusual, unexpected and great. Wearing warrior paint, they played loud and had incredible and forceful stage presence. Fucked Up were loud and the sexy lead singer ended up taking his top off! Then came Grimes, an incredible young Montreal talent with painfully catchy beats, male pole dancer in tow. Previous prize winners were also in attendance, Owen Pallett and members of Arcade fire. Drake's lack of attendance for the ceremony was the common joke of the evening. In the end though, it was Feist's final performance that left the audience somewhat aware of the winner, and win she did! She eloquently and bashfully made a sweet acceptance speech. I even got to tell her congratulations and that she was lovely!
