The Alternative Mash-Up Museum
Feeling bored 'cos it's January and you're off the booze? Then get your kicks to these fantastic alternative mash ups! Yeah!
While doing some research lately it came to our attention that The Timelords' classic number one single 'Doctorin' The Tardis' wasn't just a cheapo novelty record, but it was also likely the world's first commercially available mash-up.
Since then mash-ups have pretty much stayed hovering around the mainstream (you can even buy a Best Mash-Ups Of All Time album), but we it got us wondering whether there were any countercultural classics we'd yet to discover. Guess what? There were, and here they are.
PIXIES VS THIN LIZZY - 'THE BOYS ARE BACK IN HEAVEN'
It's odd how Phil Lynott's voice takes on a serious tone when it's whacked out of context and juxtaposed into 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' - but the classic touch on this mash-up is how Phil Retrospector managed to get the Lizzy's duelling glam guitars in there too.
BLONDIE VS THE DOORS / 'RAPTURE ON THE STORM'
We're not entirely sure this mix does a great service to Jim Morrison, who sounds unintentionally hilarious once placed into Blondie's hip-hop classic, but then again the whole point of these things is the novelty factor, right?
THE STROKES VS NOTORIOUS B.I.G 'PARTY/SOMEDAY'
The Strokes vs Biggie is a bit of a classic, with the whole thing slotting together as seamlessly as Aerosmith's Run DMC classic. Although arguably not as good. You be the judge!
FRANZ FERDINAND VS ARCTIC MONKEYS VS PUSSYCAT DOLLS / 'BRIAN, WHEN I GROW UP, TAKE ME OUT'
Someone was clearly feeling ambitious here - a bit too ambitious. Warning: this is terrible.
THE TIMELORDS / 'DOCTORIN' THE TARDIS'
After that last abomination I think it's time to claw back some dignity and go back to where we started. This track, by the duo who would become The KLF, blends Gary Glitter with the Doctor Who theme to ridiculously catchy effect.
