The Best Album Art In The World According To…. Turbowolf1. MILES DAVIS
BITCHES BREW
(1970)

It's hard to believe Mati Klarwein could fit so much epic radness onto one record sleeve. The painting extends onto the back cover too, you need to see the whole thing. Can you print the back too? It's just too awesome to talk about really, the colours slay, the layout is freaky, the content is totally mind bending. Then on top of all that Mati's incredible painting ability pushes it right over the edge. If he was still alive I'd be begging him to do a cover for us.

2. GRATEFUL DEAD
ANTHEM OF THE SUN
(1968)

The Grateful Dead have loads of incredible artwork, but I think this is my favourite. The colours are insane and the Tibetan style just kills it. Love the lettering too.

3. BLACK MOUNTAIN
IN THE FUTURE
(2008)

This one caught my eye before I ever heard it, happily it turned out I like the album just as much as the cover. The combination of the barren landscape and the subterranean tiles is so jarring and confusing. The whole thing provokes a ton of questions, really intriguing.

5. FOSTER EDWARDS' ORCHESTRA
WHAT'S NEXT?
(1964)

I mean, surely this is the best photo ever taken? I've yet to get hold of an actual copy, I've only seen it on a computer screen, but that looks like a real photo. Those are elephants. It's just too hilarious, I can hardly look at it. Then the title is like the ultimate punchline.

5. GARY NUMAN
THE PLEASURE PRINCIPAL
(1979)

This one's so simple but hints at a totally weird back-story. I really like album covers that make you feel there's a story lurking under the surface. His sharp look and the polished desk make me think maybe he's at work, and his business involves the glowing pyramid? He also looks like perhaps he's just been startled by the thing… did it just start glowing? Is it making a noise? Cool.
