The Greatest Gloomy Hits… Ever! Part One
In celebration of the utterly pants October weather, this week we're asking bands to embrace the gloom - and recommend a melancholy masterpiece!
MOJO FURY
We're gonna choose 'Something I Can Never Have' by Nine Inch Nails (from the album Pretty Hate Machine) .
For me it's just one of those songs where the lyrics and the melody are perfectly matched - almost like they're the same thing. It's one of those songs that probably landed in Trent's hands and wrote itself, 'cos of how natural it sounds.
When you listen to it you can draw out feelings of loss and despair, and if you're ever feeling down somehow matching up your feelings to the song can bring more positivity to your mind. I love it.
NOT COOL
Like millions of teenage goths, we spent many hours walking around in a semi daze - headphones on, personal CD player to hand (in a world before iPods obviously), wallowing in angst. The Cure totally soundtracked those years. As winter draws closer I occasionally like to return to that place in my head, and ‘Pictures of You’ takes me there.
Its towering guitars, dreamy reverb, heavy production and Robert Smith’s regretful yelp lift me onto a higher melancholic plain. The version on Disintegration is about 8 minutes long, meaning you can totally get lost in it on a long walk home. Lovely stuff.
