The Trial Of Is Tropical

We fire some questions at pop manipulators Is Tropical to find out who the men behind the masks really are...

Is TropicalWhen Is Tropical perform live, the three men are distorted by not only the masks they wear, but also by home-made psychedelic projections. Yet this isn't the sound of some mysterious cult society: it's pop music jim, albeit weirdo-pop.

Perhaps it's these strange juxtapositions that have created a fever around Is Tropical, even though their debut single 'When O When' only came out this week.

So who are these perverts? What are their demands? Will pop music escape alive? We grilled them to find out...

ARTROCKER: You have been accused of perverting
pop music. How do you plead?

IS TROPICAL: Guilty.

ARTROCKER: Your press biog describes
you as 'mysterious'. Is this a fair assessment?

IS TROPICAL: I'm not sure I consider myself mysterious
most of the time, but when we put on the masks its all 100% performance.
It's surprising how much you can get carried away
when you know you're disguised to some extent.

ARTROCKER: We've heard your name around
for a while, yet your debut single is only out this week. Why?

IS TROPICAL: Word travels fast, but we like to sleep in.
We played our first gig around March, but getting a single out in
9 months is harder than it sounds - especially because you're
depending on alot of other people's schedules and delays.

ARTROCKER: Should Top of the Pops be revived?
IS TROPICAL: Definately. It was an institution.
I was lucky enough to have an unmarred memory of TOTP,
and the fun of it was seeing a band you genuinely liked infiltrate it
every once in a while.

ARTROCKER: Above this text is a suspicious photo
of you wearing hankies on your face. Are you suspicious types?

IS TROPICAL: Less suspicious, more nefarious.

ARTROCKER: Do you believe in encores?
IS TROPICAL: We like to keep the set nice and short -
there's nothing worse than being burnt out seeing a band you like because
they decide to play an hour long epic set. We generally don't comprimise on that.

ARTROCKER: Planet Earth is doomed. You have 24 hours to live.
What are you up to?

IS TROPICAL: Running around trying to find some rizla...
and I've lost my shoes.
