Unwrapped: ME / ‘Insert Voice Here’
Luke from ME unwraps the 'Insert Voice Here' from the band's mini album 'Another Story High'...
'Insert Voice Here' was a song I had to write to get through writers block. "Someone in my band is trying to kill me" is a line about the forces preventing the songs from coming to fruition. I was never much a fan of the lyrics but Mikey made me keep them.
The song was written quite a long time ago and at first I wasn't particularly keen on including it on the album. Originally it was a bouncy, up-beat, OTT chorus rocker. Barny (Simon Barnicott, album producer) heard the demo and liked the melody. He pulled the song apart instrumentally, getting rid of the bouncy show tunes piano, epic guitar riffs and turned into more of a sombre affair. There was a bunch of brass to record when we were finishing off the tracking. Quite impulsively, someone threw the idea of the horn section to lay down the riff in the outro. Coming across with a mariachi vibe, we thought it sounded great and kept it.
The title is a reference to radio DJs speaking over the top of the intro to a track. When I first travelled to the UK a few years back I was astounded that a DJ would keep talking until the singer was singing, in my mind, ruining whatever potential a song may have. A throw away title that doesn't really correlate to the theme. Woops.
