Andy Murray gets in deep with first person shooter Borderlands

Borderlands is a first person shooter combined with role play that delivers a game that keeps you hanging in there for a little bit more. The game set on the baron planet of Pandora opens with an introduction to the four main character types, Soldier, Hunter, Siren, and Beserker, all of who bring their own unique skills to the game play.
After arriving at the town of Fyrestone, the player sees an image of a mysterious woman, the "Guardian Angel", who at various points in the game directs the character in order to locate the ‘Vault’ which is the ultimate goal of the game and legend says contains unrivaled wealth and power, hence the presence of the numerous psychotic characters you will meet and contend with on the way.
On your travels you will come across various friendly’s who will assign various tasks which you have to complete before advancing to the next challenge. During completion of these assignments the opportunity arises to increase your skill points and reward items. The skill points can be used on the skill tree which allows you to develop your characters skills in the direction you chose. These will come in handy for the more formidable characters you will meet.
As you explore the surroundings on each assignment you will come across various stashes of cash contained in safes, boxes and the odd crapper, which is always good for hiding your savings. Most of these are openly visible and after a short time will give you enough ‘dirty cash’ for those all important weapon upgrades.
Weapons are readily available from various dispensers and other sources throughout and come in all sizes and shapes. There is a vast range of weapons which are basically comprised of the basic version of assault, sniper and close combat weapons which are upgraded at various stages to include greater power, accuracy and capacity.
Borderlands art style might not appeal to some depending on whether you’re a fan of the realistic or animated look. For me when you’re creating the picture of a baron planet with small colonies dotted around I don’t suppose there’s a great deal you can do, however I wasn’t overawed by the look of this one.
There is no doubt that Borderlands is an engrossing shooter which will have fans of FPS burning the midnight oil however the storyline leaves a lot to be desired and for me the main characters and general backdrop were rather bland. I genuinely believe this one has potential for a few improvements and sequel would be welcomed.
