Baths @ Cargo, London
Emily Kendrick witnesses a bedroom geek blossom into Prince-gone-digital at London's Cargo... .
It can’t have escaped any avid music-lover’s attention that there is still very much a north-south divide in the UK. No more so is this evident than in the live arena; our brothers and sisters up north give it some, whilst London stands stoically still. It certainly didn’t escape Baths’ notice tonight, as he cajoled us into submission.
Exploding with glitchy funk, Baths' bespectacled appearance is a tad deceiving. Sure he’s got the control of his gadgets like a proper nerd, but he can sing and dance to make Timberlake blush. His craft with synths and beats mean we’re never in the same place for too long, as ‘Maximalist’ exemplifies, with Will Wiesenfeld juddering along at each break. Rather unsurprisingly, this is the sound of a bedroom creative breaking into life.
Tracks from last year’s album Cerulean resonate the greatest - its divided melodies and warming foley sounds perfectly hitting the fog and lazer surroundings. The falsetto of ‘You’re My Excuse To Travel’ and soul behind ‘Plea’ hit tender highs – perhaps because the vocals are clearer than for most – but the effervescence of the beats is no less effective.
Garnering the greatest audible response, ‘Lovely Bloodflow’ has Baths skittering snares and firing off a great bit of bass. His voice imitates Prince to some extent, but his enthusiasm adds to the imperfection and spreads.
By the time of Indoorsy’, we finally hit our stride, no longer scared of the awkward gesticulations; we’re all race Kelly-gone glitch, just in time for a showering of confetti canon. An awesomely convincing lord of the dance.
