Bibio @ The Garage, London
Ed Spencer isn't sure The Garage is the right place to appreciate the "psych-hop" of Bibio...
As a confirmed admirer of Bibio I must admit to feeling a bit apprehendsive about how his music would translate to a live setting. As students of his will know, his tunes have an after-hours feel to them - a sumptuous Ketamine-splodge achieved with myriad recording techniques - which comes together as a sort psych-hop compote.
Tonight The Garage is far from chooca, and perhaps consequently the night has a reserved kind of feeling to it. Early on, having been chastised for smoking in the wrong place – if ever a phrase sums up the proclivities of modern Britain, it’s that – we catch a bit of the support acts Lone and Letherette; both offering decent, interesting and slightly meanderering electronica.
As for the main man himself, Bibio's highlights include ‘Anything New’ (with its staccato synth start and Daft Punk-esque vocal-as-instrument) and ‘Light Seep’ (which has a laid back, funk feel to it).
This is all rather good, but my fears are confirmed and I find myself thinking “great music, but this is not really the setting”. Call me old-fashioned, but watching a bespectacled man twizzle a few knobs is just not the same as seeing a band up there: sweating, fingers bleeding.
