Dragging my aching and knackered body, walking the long walk to the venue in zombie style, I once again arrived at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade for my Day 2 at Clockenflap. After having learnt my lesson from last night, I was well prepared clothes-wise, and brought with me an extra cardigan and hoodie.
When I first arrived, I headed straight to the main stage to look for my friend, and was shocked by what I saw on stage - a bunch of people dressed in animal costumes jumping around on stage. Turns out they are from a band called Dada Baba, with some (a lot) of animal friends on stage.
Later on the main stage, were Supper Moment. Since they are a local band with most songs in Cantonese, they decided to cover a few English songs to appeal to the international audience that were at Clockenflap. I heard them covering Two Door Cinema Clubs’ What You Know and Coldplay’s Yellow.
Strolling along the promenade, I noticed there were finally maps and schedules available for the festival goers. At the same time, I could hear the DJs continuing their good work.
A few hours passed and finally an act which I’ve been longing to watch played - Chad Valley. I missed his performance at Field Day this year due to clashes. Chad Valley was awesome live. I thought he would have an extra instrumentalist with him, but nope, it was all on his own. Alternating between two different mics, plus the hard-working smoke machine, the whole set was quite dreamy. He played at about dinner time, and it was also the time when people started to come to the festival.
Coming up next were The Cribs. One word: WOW. The crowd was immensely huge and the people at the front few rows were all seen headbanging and had their hands up in the air. The Cribs debuted a total of two songs at Clockenflap! They said it was because of their first time playing Hong Kong. Besides, they also declared that they’d love to come back for a few more gigs! Waves of cheer came from the crowd as a positive reply to their future coming back.
Towards the end of their set, the crowd was told to ‘do whatever they want’ as The Cribs were about to play their last three songs. Of course, the crowd followed obediently. Men’s Needs was definitely a climax, with people all going crazy for the riffs.
After two British acts in a row, it was time for an American taste to neutralise my ears. French Horn Rebellion, a brother duo from Brooklyn, played an interactive set that surprised the audience. Completed with stage dives and running off stage moments, the crowd loved the interaction shared between the band and them. In the middle of French Horn Rebellion’s second last song, Up All Night, I was lucky enough to be invited to join the band onstage to help with the backing vocals. That was my stage debut as a ‘vocalist’!
I didn’t make the effort to go and see Santigold, playing the last slot of the night. Instead, I suddenly remembered about my leftover coupons that were non-refundable. Instantly, I dashed to get the remaining food and drinks. What a stomach-filling end to my Clockenflap adventure!
