Ex Libras / Anison @ 93 Feet East, London
Finn D'Albert reports on two bands who are subverting grunge into something more spaced out...
With an endless list of influences which could stretch from Radiohead to Puff Daddy, tonight's set from Ex Libras is both an unexpected pleasure and an emotionally charming surprise.
For the aforementioned influences the band are firmly rooted in heavy rock, with a visually interesting stage set and a tight control on their ethereal and spacious sounds - there's no hint of rock n' roll haphazard about them.
Vocally, singer Amit is stunning - and when coupled with heavy rock guitar and modern-classic keyboards the whole sound sticks like toffee and glue. Like a sweeter, calmer take on grunge, they're unique and compelling.
Anison playlisted Ex Libras when they were guesting on XFM the other night, so it's no surprise to find the two acts on the same bill. They're more mainstream and accessible than their support act, with single after single gushing out. It's still loud, big and beautiful with a grunge undertone, although they could be said to be less experimental and unusual than Ex Libras.
Still, I leave the gig wanting to listen to both acts on record - which I'll be doing as soon as I get home. I strongly suggest you do the same.
