Films Of Colour @ Koko, London
Alt-folk and epic stadium rock are on the menu at Koko, and Nicholas Burman is feeling peckish...
Welcome to Koko on a Friday: a brewing collection of students and Camden tourists, all getting slowly more and more drunk to classic tunes from the likes of The Killers and The Strokes. The question is, will the NME be spinning tonight's two live acts on their decks in years to come?
Ligers open with a mellow acoustic set, which aims at rock 'n' roll influenced alt-folk. Inoffensive and Radio 2-esque they might be, they nonetheless have solid songwriting and good vibes, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them picking up summer festival fans later in the year.
It's up to Films of Colour to bring out the big guns then, and true to form their crescendoing, ethereal build ups give way to choruses that burst through the speakers like Chapel Club on heat.
Although not dissimilar to crowd-pleasing, widescreen bands such as Delphic, Editors and even - at times - Coldplay, the band also have a subtle shoegaze edge to them, while Jonny Greenwood's scratchy lead guitar vibe is never far away.
The band deliver an awesome final blow with recent single (and David Bowie cover) 'Slow Burn' - which packs so much intense epic-ness it feels like it could burst at any point, but stays tight nonetheless. It could even be one for the DJ sets in a few months time...
