Grace Jones / Hot Chip @ Lovebox Festival, Victoria Park London
A little later than day one and day two, Emily Kendrick walks us through Lovebox day three...
We may have reached the end of the weekend, but the atmosphere suggests that no one at Sunday’s Lovebox is paying that any mind. The day’s line up is a collision of visual and aural spectacles, and a fine blurring of the lines of sexuality; which is perhaps why, when I’m invited to “enjoy gay day” by one of the face-painters on site, it makes perfect sense.
So while Holy Ghost! are doing their best to make strobe lighting effective in bright sunshine, accompanying some funky schtick, it’s left to the more aggressive sounds of the Rizla area to impress as Hot Chip lubricate the decks before they take to the stage.
Meanwhile, if you had any doubt about the theme of the day Hercules and Love Affair were on hand to put you in your place, wearing an elegant disco, ra-ra skirt and fabulous neon Pat Butcher earrings. Their set also featured a guest appearance from Kele Okereke, whose distinct vocals saved the set from a fairly soulless vibe of hollow beats, which when captured in clubs sound much more affective.
From the frying pan into the fire, Peaches was never likely to be a shrinking violet in this environment. With her greatest hits set of sex-injected lingo, the woman herself was unafraid to leap from her wheel chair to display her love of the UK crowd, even with a broken leg. While plaster of Paris might not be quite the smuttiest of attire, the lack thereof on her accompanying dancer more than made up for it with both cock, balls and tits out and flapping for ‘F*ck The Pain Away’ and ‘Shake Yer Dix’.
But for all the filth and fancy, today was reserved for a collective appreciation of Hot Chip. By far the biggest audience-drawer of the Sunday, the boys bounced us from one t-u-n-e to the next, with seamlessly falsetto vocals from Alexis Taylor. Despite the likes of ‘Over and Over’, ‘I Feel Better’ and ‘Ready For The Floor’ being more than familiar, the band give an air of improvisation to their live performance. This gives rise to perhaps lesser bangers creating a similarly enticing groove – such as ‘We Have Love’ which saw adoration in the form of everyone’s arms rocketing skywards.
Having demolished what remained of the grass getting our rave on, we retreat to the two-step of Chromeo, whose set pleases but doesn’t quite inspire. Then there’s the fabulousness of one Ms Jones to contend with. In fine vocal fettle, Grace gave us the kind of erotic and exotic performance we daren’t believe a woman of her years could produce. ‘La Vie En Rose’ partially lacked the class her set portrayed, but with new single ‘Love You to Life’ sounding like a deadly weapon, the divine lady needn’t worry about her craft. Visually stunning and all-round sophistication, we were glad to share a dram of wine with her to top off our night.
