Lulu & The LampshadesUpstairs at the Lexington there’s a warm glow filling up the room: the familiar feeling of body heat radiates for the tightly squeezed in crowd who are here to see Moshi Moshi darlings, Lulu and the Lampshades.

If you fear joy and shudder at twee then you’re not likely to be impressed, but for the less belligerent of us you’ll find plenty fun in their headline set. The four, sometimes five-piece fill up the stage with charm and assorted instruments. Bass and guitars are swapped as glockenspiel notes are clanked and banjo strings twanged.

Their country tinged folk-pop isn’t so distant from the sounds of Slow Club or Summer Camp, and with an EP to promote the songs, tonight the music is given a very warm reception. ‘Cold Water’ is an infectious and irresistible ditty, while ’Demons’ s both sad and not a little haunting. Later, ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ it’s very similar to Slow Club’s ‘When I Go’ – but we’ll excuse it for it’s a cappella sweetness.

A glance around the crowd reveals adoring gazes and swooning expressions, and as the band draws their set towards a close, they are flanked by two girls wearing lampshades on their heads having a good go at what looks like synchronised ‘60s dancing. It’s either all too much, or a perfect way to cap off their performance. Whichever way you look at it however, Lulu & The Lampshades make adorable pop music.
