New Blood Festival 2012 - Night Four Reviewed
Ivory Seas, Younghusband, The History of Apple Pie & The Tamborines seal the deal with Luke McKenzie, as he reports on night five at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen...
On the fifth night of the New Blood Festival we have quintessentially a noise-fest on our hands. First up are gig debutants Ivory Seas - who're understandably nervous, but the sparse crowd react appreciatively if not politely. Imagine Wild Beasts having been flambéed in the veritable juices of shoegaze and post punk and we’re nearing what this London based quartet sound like.
Next taking to the stage are former bedroom project turned live band Younghusband, who launch into their reverb-laden psych sound. They instantly muster a legion of enthusiasts down the front, if only for the wonderful use of the humble maracas and a blast of bedlam to finish that even Kevin Shields would be proud of.

Next up, The History Of Apple Pie sound a bit reserved to start with, but soon their reverence for late '80s rock becomes clear and it’s no bad thing at all. The real highlight of the set is recent single ‘Mallory’ with its bewitching all-girl vocal harmonies and a catchy-as-seasonal-colds guitar riff.
To round this eardrum bursting night off we have the fuzzy-rock of The Tamborines, who come rampaging out, sonically at least, with great swathes of crafted noise paralleling The Jesus and Mary Chain.
The stand up female drummer may be a bit contrived but it doesn’t affect the music thankfully, and with a short pause we hear a frenetic cover of ‘Sheena Is A Punk Rocker’ which draws all of Hoxton into simultaneous cavorting and rather large smiles from all still standing.
