PanicoWith both epic shoegazing concentration and a wild South American party on the bill we’re definitely promised variety tonight. But sometimes strange bedfellows get along - and tonight’s partygoers certainly seem to think so, they’ve turned up in droves.

Imagine a mysterious cloud, pregnant with sweet promise yet at the same time menacing and oppressive. Well, you could be describing Blue On Blue’s music. Here, beguiling, meticulously picked out notes create what could be womb music, except if David Lynch were conducting proceedings.

With a free floating feel invoking Spiritualized the music isn’t just static however. Singer Dee Sada may stand almost motionless but her crepuscular Cure bass provides a stalking energy to ‘Lotto’, where icy keys and a twilit mood descend into incandescent guitar fury, and ‘I Feel Warm’s’ becalmed Twin Peaks feel is interrupted by staccato bursts of shoegaze guitar.

Then Panico, from Chile via Paris. With Blue On Blue, we’ve had tingles and disturbed dreams, now with this lot its like being flagellated with a loose electric cable such is their convulsive DFA sound.

Cowbells abound, there’s spasms of Interpol guitar, even the singer looks like a victim in a Goya painting if he were having ECT treatment, in truth it takes a while to get onboard with a mix of post punk and samba rhythms here. But by ‘Transpiralo’ you’ve got it. Dedicated to samba master Tito Puente, with its playful puppy energy its the song the Rapture would write if they lived in Santiago. The singer’s puppy like too as he unleashes the ambigious, sexy chorus ‘let me turn around, stick it in my mouth’. As you ponder the logistics of this line it’s been like the best parties, with a great mix and very fruity.
