Sonic Fire Records Night @ The Monarch, London
Madam, The Unkindness of Ravens and more are delivering the darkness, with Sonic Fire curating...
Most guitarists have one or two pedals at their disposal. Garage rock two-piece psychonauts No One You Know, on the other hand, have at least fifty of the bastards scattered about on the floor. There's only one guitar too!
This however, is no Bon-Jovi-rides-the-inflatable-cock style display of excess: the sound of the band is pure shit-dipped blues, with raw riffage howled over meaty breakbeats. Frontman James is a quipper too: "Thanks for being here," he smiles, raising an eyebrow, "or are you just er... counting the minutes?"
Vetenner follow up with a set performed entirely in pitch-black darkness - which has the uncanny knack of directing your focus on the music. Speaking of which, they play NIN-style electro doom with a DIY twist, and as they finish up on a bleak instrumental it becomes clear these two shady characters have got cinematic imaginations to back up their tortured tunes.
Taking a break from their debut album recording sessions, The Unkindness Of Ravens offer a rare glimpse into what the blazes is going on inside those four studio walls: 'Accelerator' has become more drum 'n bass, while 'Virus' has mutated into a full on sci-fi horror movie of a tune.
The soul 'n distortion two piece have got the right balance between spontaneity and theatre tonight, and as frontwoman Nina staggers off the stage towards the audience with her hair covering her face it's like that scene in The Ring where that ghoul climbs out of the TV. Except set to cyber-rock music, of course.
After all these industrial nightmares, it's refreshing to find headliners Madam basking in a countryside freshness. The band sound like they've been smoking opium in some South American barnhouse, and their cello-lit tunes strike a romantic balance between the sleepiness of the Cowboy Junkies and early Velvets-style hypnotism.
