Teenagersintokyo @ Init, Rome
Mike Watson catches Teenagersintokyo in Rome and finds a plethora of uneasy marriages that they make work...
First up, a quick word about the Italian support act Holiday: if talent equalled enthusiasm, this four piece would be romping it home to festival headlining fame by the end of the year. The headliners too, have a ton of both - and this is evident from the moment Teenagersintokyo take to the stage.
Italian audiences generally aren't nearly as drunk as they ought to be, yet the band make up for it with the sheer joy emulating from the stage; this is a group who love to perform, from the ballroom diva-esque stature of singer Samantha Lim to the 'stage aura' of synthist Miska Mandic.
One of two singles from their forthcoming debut LP, 'Peter Pan' sets the scene with the band's machine-like drum and bass duo underlaying with precision its haunting keyboard and vocal lines.
One could have been forgiven for thinking of Queen's phat basslines here, yet the third song 'End it Tonight' beckons a fairer comparison. Melancholy keyboard riffs combine with rolling guitars to create an uneasy yet eventful marriage between star-eyed spiritual sister Kate Bush and the 'nice-but-odd' Human League.
In fact, uneasy marriages seem to be the forte of Teenagersintokyo, from the incongruence of their stage performance to their respective musical roles within the group. Yet, what's clear in Rome tonight is the immense ability with which they gel together their influences – Siouxie and The Banshees, Joy Division, Blondie and the Rapture all amongst them - for although these pairings feel odd, there's also something very right about them.
