That Fucking Tank / Shield Your Eyes / Local Girls @ The Windmill, Brixton
Max Raymond checks into a small venue to hear some loud noises, as That Fucking Tank rip up the Brixton Windmill....
It's a night of rock with a twist in the suburbs of Brixton. Both Shield Your Eyes and That Fucking Tank are bands that rely on complex dynamics and a heavy guitar sound - and small venues like this are almost tailor-made for them, especially when the sound levels are as good as they are at the small but charming Windmill.
It also means that Local Girls, the opening band, find it hard to fit in with their more straightforward rock sound, and the constant squealing of feedback doesn't help either. 'Yeah Roy' shows they can write songs with bite and a few more of those should make them a band worth watching out for.
The audience grows somewhat when Shield Your Eyes take to the stage and launch straight in without warning. Their music doesn't really consist going along a straight and narrow path. As soon as you think they're going in one direction they manage to go down another. This is intriguing for a bit of time but after a while you're left asking for a bit more and the long silences between songs doesn't help the momentum.
That Fucking Tank, who follow them only a few minutes later, are a lot more successful as they showcase tracks from new album TFT. They just are that ever-slightly more accessible and direct and they also comes across as more urgent, which could be down to the fact they are a two-piece and that they need to get across their sound in a way that has impact.
Having said all this, Andy Abbott and James Islip feed off each other really well in the way that only really good noisy duos can. In addition, they know some riffs, which is sometimes what you really need on a Thursday evening.
