The Kills @ Concorde 2, Brighton
Nathan Westley reports from the beaches of Brighton, where The Kills are proving they have substance over style once and for all...
It’s hard to believe that this East End originating duo have been functioning as a band for over eleven years. Having formed at the turn of the century they have progressed at a steady rate, albeit one that has not seen them take a leap and cross over to the UK mainstream but creep to a respectable place just outside it - something that is not to their detriment.
In this fast faced world, where the new is instantly celebrated and when it has grown slightly old easily discarded, The Kills have bred a loyal fanbase - and they're out in Brighton tonight, anticipation swirling among them hours before the band have even arrived on stage.
It's with the set opener and title track of their recent album, ‘No Wow’, that The Kills indicate how tonight is going to proceed: while some bands discourse early material and feverently tout the new to fair-weather fans, Alison and Jamie allow the fresh material to play a key role.
However, tonight is about all four of their albums, and the attendees are taken on a journey that charts how the band has evolved from the pent up garage vibes of the ‘Keep on your Meanside’ material to the latter day, more exponentially vibrant ‘Blood Pressures’ era.
From the venomous statement of ‘No Wow’ to the stuttered reflective pop of ‘Heart is a Beating Drum’ and later onto the subdued melancholia of ‘Black Balloon’ and the rowdy call to arms of ‘Fuck The People’, there is always a sense of realness in these rousing drum machine powered modern day anthems.
Indeed, any notion that The Kills constitute style over substance are well and truly stubbed out by tonight's show. Sometimes they delight, sometimes they enrage - but tonight it's clear that above all, The Kills matter.
