The Pains of Being Pure At Heart @ Heaven, London
Lee Puddefoot caught The Pains of Being Pure At Heart at their special London date last month...
Heaven is fast becoming one of the best medium sized venues in London and with a sweaty crowd squeezed into the club, plus a cacophony of sound swirling across the room, The Pains Of being Pure At Heart would appear to be making the most of it.
Having gained a guitarist since their last London show in December, the band's sound has been given an added boost of power, lending an extra shove to their usual melodic touch - and it's no bad thing. Completely unashamed by their influences, they blend Ride, The Stone Roses and hints of The Cure to come up with something altogether warm and fuzzy around the edges.
Oozing charm, they poke fun at singer Kip's pastel jumper and talk excitedly about wanting to hang around for the ‘Porn Idol’ show that’s happening after the gig for the G-A-Y club night.
Their set dips into parts of the debut album with ‘Young Adult Friction’ providing a particular highlight. They do, however, resist the audiences shouted request for them to play ‘Contender’ instead opting for a selection of the recent EP tracks 103 and ‘Higher Than The Stars’.
With anticipation for a follow up album already brewing, the announcement that they're recording one right now is met by happy nods of approval and requests to play the new material. Duly obliging, they debut the songs 'The Heart In Your Heartbreak’, ‘Say No To Love’ and 'Heaven’s Gonna Happen Now’.
Good times were had tonight and with the new songs, there are good times are ahead too. London has a special place, just for Pains.
