True Widow, Teeth of the Sea, Lasers From Atlantis @ NHS, The Macbeth
LP Lovecraftian space rock and flaming bass grooves await Ric Rawlins as he steps into London's New Heavy Sounds club...
It's been a while since I visited a New Heavy Sounds club night, and in my forgetfulness the first thing I do tonight is skip gayly towards the front, so the PA can blast Lazers From Atlantis directly into my brain. This is a bad idea: minutes later I'm staggering back to the exit, gibbering 'Testing, One Two!" at the top of my voice to figure out if my ears are still working.
Yes, things are as heavy as ever at NHS; Lazers From Atlantis offer instant tinitus for the naive, with their deep, low, growling grooves and slow motion meanness. It's certainly Doom, but a weird variety of Doom.
Teeth of the Sea however, offer something a little bit more multi-coloured. They begin with an ambient drone implosion, mixing trumpets, moogs and Pink-Floyd-at-Pompei dramatics to create a sort of tribal dope emporium. Remember drifting over Jupiter in Stanley Kubrick's 2001 just as it starts to turn neon? Now imagine crashing into that planet.
And yet this molten psychedelia isn't allowed to get too indulgent; you can usually count on a stealth beat, a pulsating bass riff, or a mariachi trumpet kicking in when the drone gets too epic. The band maintain tight navigational control over their ship, despite it flying through twisted universes of HP Lovecraftian terror.
Jesus! Where were we? Ah yes, the night ends with True Widow, who initially offer a slow stomp through No Wave bleakness, before breaking into decadently flaming bass grooves, roasted on the hot coals of dark-room dream rock. Plus the singer's wearing a lumberjack shirt, which is always nice.
