We Show Up On Radar / Twin Brother / Captain Angelo @ The Bull & Gate, London

Cindy Suzuki finds killing moons, mysterious circuses and tropical jives at the latest Club Fandango night

We Show Up On RadarNo matter how many times you visit the Bull and Gate in Kentish town, it always comes as a weird surprise to find yourself walking through the toilets to find the venue - but rather like the mystical train platform from Harry Potter, once you pass through the acid test, you're rewarded with all sorts of magical strangeness.

Tonight that magical strangeness come courtesy of Club Fandango, who kick us off by booking Captain Angelo; these indie-poppers fall somewhere between The Decemberists and Bright Eyes, although to label them as folk merely because they sway to the temperature of October would be misleading; they're as likely to burst into a festival jive of tropicana as they are deliver icicle-laden wintry anthemia. Marvelous.

Twin Brother are up next, and if you're a fan of Echo and the Bunnymen's 'Killing Moon', you'll find yourself at home among their tunes: think long dark highways, blue hotels and tragic endings. Singer Alex has a heartfelt, deep croon, yet for all the heart they wear on their sleeves, they're far from wet: urgency and hope are their tools, and they use them well.

Headliners We Show Up On Radar are an astonishing treat. Playing indie pop without all the twee connotations that implies, the group excel at happy/sad melodies, boy/girl vocals and melodies which are given space to breathe. There's a mild circus element to the band, although they're not as sinister as clowns or as cheesy as Blur at their most Big Top-esque. Think more Mercury Rev, dancing in the shadows at the back of the tent.
