Woven Bird / Unit, Southampton
Strong and substancial is the verdict on these Southampton upstarts reports Andy Lloyd-Williams
Hotly-tipped weirdo alt-poppers Woven Bird showed why they're the talk of the Southampton scene with a captivating Friday night set at Unit.
Recent single Saw You In Two has real depth and was particularly well-received by the healthy crowd. It’s 'off the beaten track' vibe certainly set Woven Bird apart from the other acts appearing that evening. Their balance of maturity and mischief makes for an engaging listen.
Lead vocalist Matt Canning's vocal delivery steers the fivesome into unchartered waters. His mystical yet urgent style is wonderfully unique and addictive, perfectly matching the outfit’s off-centre ideals.
With a full album set for release on FOLKWiT Records later in the year, Woven Bird has grown from a band with good ideas into a fully-formed headliner. From sketchy beginnings, their set has quickly grown a full plumage.
Set finisher 25 certainly struck a chord; I have just turned a quarter of a century myself, and the song examines life at this landmark age. Comparisons have been made with Vampire Weekend, and those similarities become obvious as this song unfolds.
As each tune came and went, it became increasingly apparent that Woven Bird's songwriting sidesteps the obvious. If you're after well-crafted songs with substance, check these guys out.
