Hold Kiss Kill / (A) Neon Girls (AA) Death Pleasures
Cindy Suzuki reviews the new double A side from ambiently hedonistic rockers Hold Kiss Kill...
This Monday sees the release of the second single from Hold Kiss Kill, a vampiric band of hedonistic drone-rockers from London. Having worked with Artrocker to give away a flexi-disc of their debut release earlier in the year, we were keen to get our ears around their latest sinister offerings.
This double A-side doesn't disappoint; 'Neon Girls' cracks open the stereo width to release a cavernous amount of ambient and disorientating noise, surrounding what is essentially a meditative pop song. The band know when to pull back and get intimate, and when to bend their guitar strings to just the right degree of queeziness.
The ominously titled 'Death Pleasures' holds even less back: a night time drive into a sort of X-rated Gotham City atmosphere, the band are pulverising their instruments here - yet still find time for a considered - almost tender - chorus among the carnage.
On this evidence, Hold Kiss Kill's masterplan is still gradually being revealed, one sci-fi soundscape at a time. Stunning.
