SINGLE OF THE WEEK:
HOT CHIP /
ONE LIFE STAND
(EMI)

Hot Chip’s latest stunning single marks a subtle, resonant fanfare to some rather wonderful things. No, romance isn’t dead; no, music isn’t dead; and yes, the dance-floor can become a setting for heartfelt, pathos-laden brilliance. True to form, it’s three and a half minutes of soulful, sweet, quintessentially English awkwardness, and definitive proof that the geek really shall inherit the earth. HOT CHIP / ONE LIFE STAND

THE MACCABEES FT. ROOTS MANUVA / EMPTY VESSELS (FICTION)
To take the haunted and despondent “alone, alone, alone” to a big old noise – from one of last year’s most rapturous tracks, ‘No Kind Words’ – it required a heavyweight like Roots. Merging The Maccabees to the soullessness of the street, there is a beauty in the bleakness of Roots’ rhymes which, somewhat oddly, is as timely as ever. EK

THE MIRRORKICKS / ANYTHING (FRUITPIE RECORDS)
Ignore the weak beginning and the expectation that the name 'Roxanne' will be screeched out as the chorus kicks in and you are left with a relatively catchy and upbeat indie single. Though at times this song can sound a tad weak and amateurish (not in a good way), the essentials are there. The Mirrorkicks have already shown they are improving with time so, to quote D:Ream, things can only get better. NB

UFFIE / MCS CAN KISS (BECAUSE RECORDS)
The most hateable voice in music is back. Crawling from the depths of 2006, Uffie returns to lecture us about our GTA playing and weed smoking: apparently “what’s wrong with our generation”. All this from the girl who just “don’t give a fuck”. If this bizarre patronising weren’t enough, the song ends with an inexplicable sax solo. As annoying as ever. CJ

FACTORY FLOOR / LYING (BLAST FIRST PETITE RECORDS)
The relentless loop of two note keyboards is the sort of thing that drives people to insanity. But as the wayward and encapsulating vocal bleeds you onwards a cacophony of percussive delights take hold. If this trio keep on with sonic distortions we’ll all have trouble sleeping at night. EK
