When My Day Comes
(Island Records)

Sometimes it takes a band who write tunes to remind you that most bands don’t. ‘When My Day Comes’ has the feel of a tune with big regrets but the optimism to save the day at the last minute, in this case an age-old friendship which has fallen on the railway tracks. Quality guitar pop.

The Leisure Society
Dust on the Dancefloor
(Full Time Hobby)

With its folky tinge, melancholy lyric and yet merry temperament, ‘Dust on the Dancefloor’ is a lovely thing very much in keeping with Mr Belle and Mrs Sebastian. Building as it does to a swelling “la, la la” climax (ahem), it certainly makes you want to check them out further.

Beaty Heart
Slush Puppy / Cola
(Worry Free)

This new EP from South London three-piece Beaty Heart shares some hallmarks with Animal Collective’s tribal psychedelics, but has enough voodoo of its own to stand proud. ‘Slush Puppy’ feels like a thought bubble floating through a cavernous rainforest, with the BBC’s Safari Orchestra on hand to strike up the marimbas and join the chattering macaws for a boogie.
Elsewhere, ‘We’re All Friends Here’ is the best track. With a gently strummed acoustic keeping the song anchored as the vocal floats up to the ceiling, this could be a widescreen Brian Eno production of native African music, with chanting and traditional rhythms melting into a puddle of electro drool.
