Cold Hard Rock

(Vertigo)

* * * *

This will be FOE (aka Hannah Louise Clark)’s first release on Vertigo Records after being signed in a frenzy of underground hype - and what an entrance the 20 year old has made. Crashing through the door like a shit-faced teenager at 4am, ‘Cold Hard Rock’ tells the story of a cheating lover in an irresistible slur of big beats and angst-ridden, heartbroken lyrics.
FOE throws together the trashy grunge of Garbage’s Shirley Manson (herself already a big fan) with the punk-pop sexiness of Debbie Harry to construct a mouth-watering slice of provocatively dirty rock.

Deco Child

Pray

(Ninja Tune)

* *

The story behind the song’s title allegedly involves Alex Lloyd (aka Deco Child) seeing ‘Pray’ scraped into the pavement whilst walking along looking at the ground. Presumably he was gazing at his shoes? Oh the convenient irony! The song itself is a well constructed, emotive, but far from ground-breaking affair, sweeping relaxingly through Four Tet style, melodic, electronic samples before building to a crescendo of euphoria.
