Deep Space Gets a Signal Boost: NASA’s New Hybrid Antenna Beams Back Data from Psyche Mission 40 Times Faster

February 13, 2024 – In a leap forward for deep space communication, NASA has successfully installed and operated a new hybrid antenna capable of receiving both radio and laser signals. This innovative technology, dubbed Deep Space Station 13 (DSS-13), is currently tracking data from the Psyche spacecraft, offering a glimpse into the future of faster and more efficient communication across the vast distances of space.

The Psyche mission, launched in October 2023, carries a special laser transceiver as part of NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) technology demonstration. Since November 2023, DSS-13, a 34-meter antenna retrofitted with specialized mirrors, has been successfully capturing the faint laser signals beamed back from Psyche, which is currently millions of kilometers away.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for several reasons.
